Elementary Spanish, Middle School Latin, High School Spanish I & Spanish  II* offered every other year. 

 

ELEMENTARY SPANISH (K-5th) __________________________________

Students will learn basic Spanish vocabulary and phrases through interactive games, songs and hands on activities.  Songs and games provided for optional at home practice.

MIDDLE SCHOOL LATIN______________________________________

Why study Latin?  Do you wish you had a good answer to this question?  

 

From Classical Academic Press:

  • Professions steeped in Latin vocabulary: law, medicine, science, music, art, philosophy, and theology

  • Romance Languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian are all forms of Latin.

  • Educational Virtues: The study of Latin requires concentration, analysis, and puzzle-solving that develop a student as a student.  It also helps gifted students to slow down and attend!

  • English Vocabulary: 50% of all English words come from Latin; 90% of all polysyllabic words come from Latin.

  • English Grammar: The regular grammar of Latin is ideal for shedding light on the way all languages work—including English.

  • Writing/Reading: An increased vocabulary and understanding of grammar enable students to write and read with greater ease and clarity.

  • Pleasure: Deciphering the “secret code” of Latin and reading great authors in their own tongue, is a pleasure that can last a lifetime.

Intermediate Latin A   (6th)

Prerequisite:  none

Text: Latin for Children Primer A Student Book and Answer Key (Classical Academic Press)

Do not be fooled by the name of this text!  Latin for Children is rigorous, engaging, incremental, and the best Latin program that we have found. Students will use songs, chants, and games to learn grammar and vocabulary. Short daily workbook lessons completed at home reinforce the class work. Students will begin translating and speaking Latin and make their way through a Latin history reader.   This class meets at Heritage two days per week and online one day each week.

Intermediate Latin B (7th+) - offered if there is enough interest

Prerequisite:  Completion of Latin for Children Primer B 

Text: Latin for Children Primer B Student Book and Answer Key (Classical Academic Press) and Latin for Children B History Reader

Students will use songs, chants, and games to learn grammar and vocabulary (240 of the most frequently occuring words). Short daily workbook lessons completed at home reinforce the class work. Students will begin translating and speaking Latin and even make their way through a Latin history reader.  This class meets at Heritage two days per week and online one day each week.

SPANISH I and II______________________________________________

Both Spanish I and II courses seek to develop a solid foundation in basic Spanish vocabulary and grammatical concepts. Heritage's goal is that students in all Spanish courses will...

  • Develop a love for learning languages and new language study strategies

  • Feel confident hearing and speaking Spanish, not just reading and writing since primary goal of learning a language is communication!

  • Connect and build community with other students through partner activities and games that reinforce the language

 

This class is lively and entertaining, yet challenging.  Engaging, interactive in-class activities (1 hour/week + 45 min/week online) seek to develop speaking and listening skills in the target language.  Homework assignments (45 - 60 min/week) generally involve writing assignments and vocabulary memorization.  

 

Spanish II- offered 2020-2021

​

Spanish I, taught primarily in English, is a basic introduction to the Spanish language.  By the end of the year students should be able to more or less "hold their own" on a short trip to a Spanish speaking country or in a conversation with people they meet here in the U.S. who may not speak English very well.  Among other things, students can expect to be able to do the following by the end of this course:

 

  • Introduce yourself and get basic information from a native speaker.

  • Ask someone about his or her family and describe yours in detail.

  • Talk to someone about what sorts of things kids in the U.S. normally do in their free time.

  • Tell someone what your plans are during your vacation.  

  • Understand weather forecasts you see in Spanish newspapers and/or hear on the radio.

  • Understand bus/train schedules.

  • Describe where you are going and what you are doing.

  • Understand many of the differences and similarities between U.S. and Latin American culture.

Spanish II- offered again in 2021-2022

Spanish II, taught primarily in Spanish, is a second year course. Although students will not be fluent by the end of the year, they will definitely have a broad range of both vocabulary and grammatical concepts to draw upon when communicating in the target language. Among other things, students can expect to be able to do the following by the end of this course:

  • Read and understand house/apartment rental advertisements.

  • Describe their own home and compare it to someone else's

  • Ask for and give directions.

  • Order food in a restaurant.

  • Bargain for produce at a farmer’s market.

  • Describe daily routines.

  • Look for and buy clothing at the mall.

  • Explain to a doctor what hurts or report an accident.

  • Tell friends at school what they did over the weekend.
